Travel tips
Siena is famed for its medieval architecture. This typical Tuscan hill town's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Siena's main attractions are its magnificent medieval churches, villas and other structures. Siena Cathedral dating from the 13th century, is a highlight, with frescoes and bas reliefs by artists such as Donatello. Other sights include the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia on the Piazza del Campo, and the shrine of St. Catherine of Siena.
In summer, Siena hosts a variety of events, including the spectacular Palio di Siena horse race and the Siena Jazz Festival. There are classical music concerts throughout the year too.
The hills around town make for excellent if challenging walking and cycling, with charming towns such as Monteriggioni to explore, as well as camping. For an adventure with a difference, try a guided tour of the city's underground waterways. Afterwards, relax in one of the thermal springs of the nearby Orcia Valley.
Don't forget to visit some of the wineries of the Siena Chianti region. Local dishes to try include chicken liver crostini, pappardelle with hare sauce and roast pork. Siena is also famous for its panforte and the almond biscuits known as ricciarelli.
