Pisa is located on the banks of the Arno River where it flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Once an important maritime centre, this bustling Tuscan city is now a major university town.
The main attraction in Pisa is its famed Leaning Tower. The structure is found on the Piazza dei Miracoli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many breath-taking churches, mansions and other architectural treasures dotted around the city too. Other sights include the University botanical gardens and the giant Keith Haring mural, Tuttomondo.
Two popular events in Pisa, both held in summer, are the Luminara festival and the Gioco del Ponte. Its seaside location means that Pisa has some great beaches. There are many opportunities for hiking and cycling too and you can go on boat cruises along the Arno. The city also has several campsites, even a couple close to the Leaning Tower.
The nearby hills of Tuscany mean that game such as wild boar, hare and pheasant as well as truffles, mushrooms and cheese are on the menu in Pisa but you'll also find seafood, especially cod prepared 'alla Pisana'. Pisa also makes for a great base from which to explore Tuscany's excellent wineries.
