Travel tips
Messina is a large city on the Italian island of Sicily. It lies on the north coast, with a sickle-shaped harbour and a ferry port that most visitors to Sicily pass through.
Messina has a large cathedral, dating back to Norman times, and a beautiful, Gothic church, Santa Maria Alemanna. The Regional Museum has a gallery with several works by Caravaggio.
Messina is surrounded by the Peloritani mountain range and is close to Mount Etna. Hikers can climb the slopes and enjoy mountain trails, waterfalls and streams. Boat trips visit the spectacular coastline, including the nearby Aeolian Islands.
