Bergamo, a city that lies just 40km northeast of Milan, is one of Italy's cultural centres, with some of the most highly regarded and pivotal art galleries in the country. The Accademia Carrara is one, and doubles up as a reputable fine arts academy. There are also many must see sights of cultural significance, including palaces, churches and squares.
Activity wise, Bergamo certainly is not lacking. Winter sports are popular in the Alpine foothills, and cycling and hiking can be enjoyed in the open and beautiful Sant'Omobono Terme mountains and Seriana Valley.
