Some of the 46 preserved Palazzi, built during Renaissance and Baroque eras, house masterpieces painted by Caravaggio, Cambiaso, Veronese, Van Dyck and other great masters. Piazza Matteotti is the right spot for local food tasting at a colourful farmers' market. The farinata pancake, minestrone soup, trofie pasta and pasqualina artichoke-stuffed pie are not to be missed out on, aw well as the ubiquitous pesto, which even has its dedicated annual championship.
Relaxing on the pristine beaches scattered around Genova is a logical next step to the urban and historical exploration. The beautifully azure Nervi and Quinto beaches are a short bus drive away from the town, while the medieval abbey on San Fruttuoso can be reached by some of the numerous tourist boats. To admire the local panorama, climb up the nearby Righi Hill the romantic way, by funicular. To make some breath-taking panoramic photos and visit the ancient castles, plan a day of hiking up and down Righi.
