Modena is a city on the south of the Po Valley, in the northern central region of Emilia-Romagna. Famous sons of the city include Enzo Ferrari and Luciano Pavarotti.
Modena is a Mecca for car lovers, as Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati are headquartered there. Ferrari and Lamborghini both have museums and offer factory tours at Maranello and Sant’Agata, respectively. Other visitor attractions include the Botanical Gardens, the Palazzo Ducale and the Duomo 12th Century medieval centre. The architecture in the town is stunning and is littered with beautiful ancient churches and other grand buildings.
Modena is famed for its production of balsamic vinegar, and there is the Balsamic Vinegar Museum in the nearby town of Spilamberto.
The Emilia-Romagna region also produces Parmesan cheese in nearby Parma, as well as prosciutto.
Modena and Emilia-Romagna are a fascinating areas to visit, with rich Italian history from the medieval time to the extraordinary happenstance of three of the most iconic car makers setting up shop there in the modern age.
