Situated in Calabria in southern Italy, Tropea traces its roots to the Roman period. The scenic and cheerful town overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Sights and AttractionsMain sights in Tropea include the Monastery of Santa Maria dell’Isola, which is built on a rocky hill overlooking a small beach. The town also has a twelfth century Norman cathedral with a fourteenth century painting of the Virgin Mary of Romania.
ActivitiesThe seaside resort is an excellent camping destination, with visitors from across Europe using camper vans or one of many campsites in and around the town. Sailing to the Aeolian Islands is a great way to experience the sea and explore the region.
Day TripsOther destinations along the Calabrian coast include the fishing town of Scilla and the seaside town of Pizzo. Day trips to the Stromboli volcano are also popular.
