Known as the City of Flowers, Sanremo in Liguria was founded as a Roman settlement. The city is located on the Italian Riviera and host several popular annual events, including the Sanremo Musical Festival.
Built in 1905, the Sanremo Municipal Casino is a major draw. The city is also an important cultural centre. The Ariston Theatre hosts music and theatre, while the Municipal Casino’s Opera Theatre is the home of the town’s renowned symphony.
Sanremo hosts the longest professional one-day cycling race, the 298-kilometre Milano Sanremo Classic. A path along the coast is perfect for walking or cycling and stretches as far as Imperia. Exploring the cobblestone lanes that descend from the hillside in the old town is particularly beautiful during the sunset.
Monte Carlo is about fifty kilometres to the west of Sanremo. About 25 kilometres to the east is Imperia, the provincial capital and home to pretty cathedrals and churches.
