Travel tips

Lake Garda

Lago di Garda, set between the regions of Trentino, Lombardy and Veneto, has been a favourite holiday destination for centuries. This culturally-diverse region has flavours of Mitteleuropa in the north, and a Mediterranean feel to the south, with its vineyard-covered slopes.

Sightseeing

Admire the spectacular views of the lake and mountains by taking the cable car which ascends 1760m from Malcesine to Monte Baldo. Isola del Garda, with its crenellated castle, is the island home of Contessa Cavazza and her seven children. Explore luxuriant, formal gardens and the neo-Gothic villa, or take a boat to the island from many of Garda's resorts.
At Sirmione, experience true well-being in the spa that is fed by natural hot springs. From Riva, walk 3.5k up a steep route past wayside shrines and oleander groves to the ruined castle of Bastione, high above the town.

Food and drink

Olive oil is used in many dishes; it combines well with fresh lake fish, polenta and meat dishes. Lemon Houses are unique to Lago di Garda, as well as Limoncello liqueur flavours sweets and ices. Garda vineyards produce top quality wines: the northern shores grow Merlot, Cabernet and Vino Santo varieties while the southern region produces Classico Groppello. A vineyard tour will allow you to choose your favourites, and all are excellent partnered with the local cuisine.

Sporting activities

The north end of the lake is renowned for many water-sports; there is usually a pleasant breeze blowing which creates perfect sailing, water skiing and wind-surfing conditions. Walkers of all levels of fitness will find a route to suit their abilities, whether it is a gentle stroll along the shore, or a challenging hiking expedition in the mountains above the lake.
