Situated in south-west Italy, Crotone is a province and city in the region of Calabria. Founded as an Achaean colony in around 710 BC, Crotone has a rich history with a number of important archaeological sites.
Crotone, the province’s capital city, is home to the sixteenth century Castle of Charles V. With a neo-classical façade and a Baroque interior, the town’s Cathedral was built between the ninth and eleventh centuries.
Just outside the city is Capo Colonna, a significant archaeological area with the remains of the temple of Hera Lacinia. Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, Cirò Marina has the ruins of Apollo’s temple. The town also boasts an excellent beach. Other interesting areas include Isola di Capo Rizzuto, Le Castella, San Serverina, and Cirò.
Lake Ampollino is a quiet and inspiring spot for a day out canoeing or kayaking. The lake is also encircled by several cycling paths for a bike ride. With several inviting lakes and picturesque villages, Sila National Park is a good choice for hiking and mountain biking. Diving is excellent around the serene costs of Isola di Capo Rizzuto.
