Catanzaro is the capital of the province of the same name in the southern Italian region of Calabria. The town is close to the coast of the Ionian Sea and was once a Greek colony. Today, Catanzaro along with the coastal towns in the province are major holiday destinations.
Major sights in Catanzaro include the twelfth century Duomo and the remains of a Norman castle, including its tower. Villa Trieste has lovely gardens, while the Belvedere is a scenic spot to see the Fiumarella Valley and the Gulf of Squillace. The Catanzaro Bridge is one of the tallest bridges in Europe.
Approximately 20 kilometres to the south-west, Borgia is home to the Scolacium Archaeological Park with remnants of a pre-Roman settlement.
The nearby coast offers great spots for diving, waterskiing and windsurfing. The nearby Sila Piccola National Park is a popular destination for mountain biking, hiking and climbing.
