Travel tips
Matera, in Southern Italy, is one of the country’s most culturally significant cities that makes for a travel experience like no other. Aesthetically outstanding and unique, the ancient houses of Matera are carved from soft rock and have a distinctly charming appearance. Another interesting thing to note is that under many of its streets, cave dwellings dating back at least 9,000 years can be found. These caves are one of the main attractions of Matera and it’s understood that they were inhabited by humans from the Palaeolithic age, and even acted as housing until well into the 20th century.
Matera also boasts some great hiking routes, where you can get unbeatable views of the city and its impressive architecture. This region is widely considered as producing some of the best bread in Italy. Lamb and pizza are also popular specialities, along with a splendid locally produced wine, aglianico.
The province of Matera also includes famous cities on the sea of the Ionian coast of Italy, where you can find many campsites and villages: Metaponto, Pisticci, Policoro, Scanzano Ionic and Nova Siri, where there are nice sandy beaches.
